Statement on the FAO 2026 State of World Fisheries...

Following the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization's release of its 2026 State of World Fisheries & Aquaculture report this week, Rocky Sanchez Tirona, head of Rare'scoastal fisheries program, released the following statement:

"The UN report confirms what we already know-sustainable fisheries effectively protect vital ocean ecosystems, while meeting the food security and economic needs of coastal communities. The report also reminds us that small-scale fisheries are anything but small in impact, contributing greatly to the economies of coastal communities around the world.

"We welcome this report. But what we need now is action.

"Fisheries thrive when local communities have the rights and resources to manage them effectively. This report should be a wake-up call to national governments and international funders to do all they can to empower those communities."
