Colorado Department of Education announces two of eight finalists for 2026 Colorado Teacher of the Year
Julie Naski Roman of Denver Public Schools and Kendall Van Valkenberg of Eagle County School District named finalists
DENVER - The Colorado Department of Education and representatives from schools and school districts today surprised two teachers in their classrooms with news that they are among the eight finalists in the running to be Colorado's 2026 Teacher of the Year.
State Board of Education Chair Rebecca McClellan (CD6) and State Board Member Lisa A. Escárcega (CD1) joined Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova, Boettcher Foundation Vice President of Grants & Programs Tiffany Anderson, Denver Public Schools Board Member Scott Esserman and Superintendent Alex Marrero to surprise finalist Julie Naski Roman from Carson Elementary School in Denver Public Schools.
In the afternoon, Eagle County Superintendent Philip Qualman, Boettcher Foundation Alumni Engagement Manager Floyd Pierce, and CDE's Chief Communications Officer Emma Garrett-Nelson celebrated finalist Kendall Van Valkenberg from Red Canyon High School in Eagle County School District.
Eight finalists were selected from the 22 semifinalists who were announced in June 2025. This year, there were 419 applicants from 109 districts, an increase of 375% from the previous year. These were the first two teachers out of eight who will be named finalists over the next few weeks. The 2026 Colorado Teacher of the Year winner will be announced in October.
Each finalist received $1,500 from the Colorado Department of Education and the Boettcher Foundation and each finalist's school received $500 from the Boettcher Foundation.
"The Colorado Teacher of the Year finalists embody the creativity, commitment, and heart that define exceptional teaching," said Boettcher's Anderson. "We are proud to partner in a program that lifts up Colorado's educators and highlights the exceptional work they do in shaping the lives of our students."
The first two finalists are:
Julie Naski Roman, Carson Elementary School, Denver Public Schools
Julie Naski Roman has been an educator for 30 years and teaches literacy, math, and special education at Carson Elementary School. She says her goal is to equip all students with the necessary skill sets to perform at their highest potential. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit Mercy and a master's degree from the University of Colorado.
"We want to congratulate Julie for her hard work and dedication to the students of Denver and for the teachers she's supported," said Commissioner Córdova. "Julie's extensive classroom experience in math, literacy and teaching students with special needs has made her into a deeply caring teacher who knows how to reach every student where they are."
Denver Public Schools Superintendent Marrero said: "For more than three decades, Julie has dedicated her life to students. She has taught literacy, mathematics and special education. In addition, she also teaches Multilingual Language Education (MLE) courses for teachers to support multilingual learners. Julie's experience, dedication, and enthusiasm are truly irreplaceable! Congratulations Julie! The students of Denver are so fortunate to have you!"
Kendall Van Valkenberg, Red Canyon High School, Eagle County School District
Kendall Van Valkenberg teaches English language arts at Red Canyon High School and has been an educator for 12 years. One of her notable achievements is creating the Sk8 Gypsum class which built a new skate park in the community and was featured on a national broadcast on PBS. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and a master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
"Kendall brings energy and imagination to her teaching," said Córdova. "By launching projects like the Gypsum skate park, she shows her students that their ideas matter and that they have the power to create meaningful change in their community."
Eagle County School District Superintendent Qualman said: "Kendall has been an integral part of the ECSD for over 12 years. Her infectious attitude and commitment to her students are evident in her everyday work, and we couldn't think of a better candidate to be recognized by the state as a Teacher of the Year Finalist."
The 2026 Colorado Teacher of the Year will represent the state as a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year program and serves as a teaching ambassador to communities and organizations around the state and nation.
The program is sponsored by the Boettcher Foundation and supported by partnerships with the Colorado Education Association, Adams State University, and Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Kendall Van Valkenberg, Escuela Preparatoria Red Canyon, Distrito Escolar del Condado de Eagle
Kendall Van Valkenberg enseña artes del Lenguaje Inglés en la escuela preparatoria Red Canyon High School y lleva 12 años dedicada a la docencia. Uno de sus logros más destacados es la creación de la clase Sk8 Gypsum, que construyó un nuevo parque de patinaje en la comunidad y apareció en un programa de televisión nacional de la cadena PBS. Es licenciada por la Universidad de Colorado Boulder y tiene un máster por la Universidad del Norte de Colorado.

El Maestro del Año de Colorado 2026 representará al estado como candidato al programa Nacional del Maestro del Año y actuará como embajador docente ante comunidades y organizaciones de todo el estado y la nación.
