Chinese Ambassador to Tonga Liu Weimin Meets with Representatives of UN Institutions in the Pacific Island Countries

On March 25th, Ambassador Liu Weimin met with Mr. Dirk Wagener, UN Resident Coordinator in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu, and the delegation of the UN Joint Mission to Tonga, including representatives from UN Development Programme, the World Health Organization, and the International Labour Organization. The two sides exchanged views on cooperation between China and UN institutions in Tonga and reached broad consensus on deepening coordination and building diverse partnerships.

Ambassador Liu stated that China highly values the essential role of the United Nations in global governance, firmly supports the UN system in carrying out aid programs in Tonga that suit local conditions, and stands ready to further enhance communication and coordination, actively explore tripartite cooperation, and deliver more practical cooperation outcomes. Mr. Wagener and the delegation briefed on the work progress of various UN entities in Tonga, expressing readiness to deepen cooperation with China across sectors, pool strengths and resources, and jointly support Tonga in achieving sustainable development for the benefit of its people.
