LD24: Sherrill Signs S-2260, Pushing Parents Aside in Major Medical Decisions Involving Minors

Parker Space Posted on August 21, 2026

Senator Parker Space, Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia, and Assemblyman Michael Inganamort (all R-Morris, Sussex, Warren) issued the following statement after Governor Sherrill signed S-2260 into law:

"Governor Sherrill signed S-2260, expanding New Jersey's protections for gender-affirming care, including care involving minors. Once again, Trenton is diminishing the role of parents in serious medical decisions involving their own children.

"Consider what New Jersey already permits: A minor can obtain an abortion without parental consent or notification, with no gestational-age limit whatsoever. The procedure does not have to be performed by a licensed physician.

"That should be deeply disturbing to every parent, regardless of politics. And instead of looking at New Jersey's existing laws and asking whether we have gone too far in excluding parents, S-2260 expands the state's protected reproductive health care framework to include services related to gender identity, including those involving minors.

"We are also deeply concerned that S-2260 limits the ability of professional licensing boards to take action against medical professionals for conduct involving protected health care activities and further restricts cooperation with other states. Medical decisions should be guided by sound medical judgment, patient safety, and the best interests of children, not political ideology.

"Children are not adults. Parents have both a right and a responsibility to protect their children. They are not an obstacle to a child's care; they are one of a child's most important safeguards. Yet New Jersey continues moving in a direction that pushes them further away from decisions with lifelong consequences.

"We opposed S-2260 when it came before the Legislature and warned about its consequences before it reached the Governor's desk.

"We will continue fighting to protect parental rights, preserve meaningful medical safeguards, and put the health, safety, and long-term well-being of New Jersey's children first."
