A stabbing was reported at 7:43 p.m. on April 2, at the top of Skinner Butte Lookout, 2 Skinner Butte Loop. Officers responded and found a 34-year-old Florida man with injuries. Multiple passersby were helping him with first aid and he was conscious and breathing. An officer provided additional first aid and Eugene Springfield Fire arrived to take over care and transport him to a local hospital.
The victim was visiting from out of state and reported a man in a white van was talking about violence near where the victim was situated. He told the man to stop talking like that and the man got out of his van and confronted the victim. The victim reported the suspect got close and then stabbed him. The victim was able to get help from other people nearby.
EPD's Violent Crimes Unit was assigned this case. The suspect, 30-year-old Deryk Mitchell Johnson, was taken into custody during a high-risk stop after his van was spotted at 1910 W. 6th Avenue. He was taken to Eugene Police headquarters for a continued investigation and while he was being escorted out to a patrol vehicle for his transport to Lane County Jail he slammed his head against a wall, leaving a hole. Johnson was transported to Lane County Jail on charges that include Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use Weapon, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (case 25-05252).
