Educators who were recognized at The Ohio State University's annual Faculty Awards Celebration represent inventive teaching, innovative research and impactful service, said President Walter "Ted" Carter Jr. The event was held April 25 at the Fawcett Center.

"Our faculty are among the best in the world at what they do. From medicine to agriculture to technology, business and the arts, your work changes and literally saves lives," Carter told honorees. "Your teaching, research and service is the core of our land-grant mission. You're on the front lines with our students every day, preparing them to tackle complex challenges and become thoughtful, engaged citizens and leaders. You're out in the community helping fellow Ohioans lead healthier and more productive lives."

The event recognizes the work of Ohio State faculty at every professional phase, from those who are early in their careers to professors who have long been spearheading teaching and research initiatives, said Provost Ravi Bellamkonda.

"It celebrates teaching, it celebrates service, it celebrates mentorship," he said. "This is why we go into research. This is why we become faculty. This is why we work at the university. … You do it because you love to do it, and I'm very grateful for that."

The Distinguished University Professor appointment, Ohio State's highest faculty honor, was awarded to Patrick L. Green, Department of Veterinary Biosciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, and three professors in the College of Arts and Sciences: Peter L. Hahn, Department of History; Anita Hopper, Department of Molecular Genetics; and Michael Lisa, Department of Physics.

"This honor is presented annually to no more than six tenure-track professors who have truly exceptional records in teaching, in research, scholarly or creative work and in service," said Patrick Louchouarn, senior vice provost for faculty. "The title of Distinguished University Professor is a permanent honor that includes automatic membership into the President and Provost's Advisory Committee."

Three professors were recognized with the President and Provost's Award for Distinguished Faculty Service: L. Camille Hébert, Moritz College of Law; and Mitchell B. Lerner, Department of History, and Sara Watson, Department of Political Science, both in the College of Arts and Sciences.

"These awardees are timeless servants of the university whose work has demonstrable impact, their contribution to the development and implementation of the university," Louchouarn said. "Policies and programs through non-administrative roles have been extensive and have positively impacted the quality of our university."

The Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to six faculty members.

"The Distinguished Scholar Award is among the highest annual honors The Ohio State University bestows on a faculty member in recognition of outstanding scholarly activity, research or creative works," said Helen Malone, vice provost for academic policy and faculty resources. "These colleagues represent exceptional achievements in their field and have brought distinction to themselves and Ohio State."
