BOISE, Idaho - March 20, 2026 - Want to file your income taxes without paying money to do it? Most Idahoans can either prepare and e-file their federal and Idaho taxes for free or get free help to prepare their taxes. Visit the Idaho State Tax Commission's Free File page at tax.idaho.gov/freefile. The links on the page include:
Free e-filing options
Most Idahoans with an adjusted gross income of $89,000 a year or less probably qualify to prepare and e-file their federal and Idaho taxes for free.
Taxpayers should carefully review the free e-filing offers to see which ones they qualify for. They should use the links on tax.idaho.gov/freefile, so they don't have to pay.
Free options for in-person help
Idahoans who want a more personal touch can use the links on the Free File page to find help preparing their income tax returns at volunteer tax preparation sites throughout Idaho. The free help is intended for senior citizens and people with low-to-moderate incomes who have simple federal and Idaho tax returns. That includes taxpayers submitting a state return only to get a grocery credit refund.
All sites offer electronic filing for faster refunds. Some offer help in Spanish, and certain sites require you to make an appointment.
The Tax Commission recommends that taxpayers check the site information on the day they want to visit since times and dates can change. Taxpayers will need to bring certain tax documents to help with return preparation.
Idahoans without internet access can find a tax preparation site by calling (800) 906-9887. They also can call AARP's automated system at (888) 227-7669.
The deadline to file 2025 income taxes is Wednesday, April 15.
