In Memoriam: John Richardson

John Richardson, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Western Washington University, passed away on July 9. John was a professor in the Sociology Department from 1974 - 2009 and also served as Sociology Department Chair during his tenure at Western.

Richardson earned his undergraduate degree at Pacific University and completed his doctorate in Sociology at the University of California-Davis. Richardson was a beloved professor who taught thousands of students about sociological theory and sociology of education.

Richardson's scholarship traced the historical origins of common schooling in the American states, with a particular focus on the institutional expansion of special education as a worldwide phenomenon. In addition to publishing numerous research articles, Richardson published four scholarly books. These included an edited volume and three works of historical sociology. Writing about his 2020 book "Comparing Special Education," a reviewer from Oxford University wrote "this is the most important book on special education to be produced for decades."

Colleagues remember Richardson as unerringly kind, remarkably humble, and a consummate scholar. He mentored many students at Western, including several who went on to become sociology professors.

In addition to his scholarly work, Richardson could often be seen running on the trails around Bellingham Bay. He was an excellent tennis player, and he carved beautiful, polished wood and stone sculptures.

A gathering to honor John's life will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Squalicum Boathouse in Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation.
