A few updates on Camp Sekani.
Initial site visit: A few Parks & Recreation staff had a chance to do an initial walkthrough of part of the Camp Sekani burn area last week, escorted by Fire personnel. Damage is widespread on the trails, but thankfully, the disc golf area wasn't hit hard.
Next steps: Our next step is a full site visit and damage assessment, with an initial focus on hazard mitigations (trees, erosion, etc.). We'll also assess the trails to determine repair needs.
Once we have a better assessment, we'll connect with our volunteer groups on what those plans look like, a possible timeline, and ways we can all work together to reopen safely.
What's open: In the meantime, the west side of Beacon Hill remains open, including Shields Park and Minnehaha Park access areas.
Since the Camp Sekani lot is closed from the fire, we're opening the expanded dirt parking lot on the east side of Minnehaha Park, which was built in preparation for Make Beacon Hill Public Phase II construction work that will temporarily close the Camp Sekani parking lot for improvements. That construction work is anticipated to start around August, and shouldn't be delayed by the fire.
Whether the Camp Sekani parking lot opens briefly between this current closure and construction is still being evaluated.
What's closed: Camp Sekani remains closed, with signs in place.
Camp Sekani will again be an incredible recreation space, it's just going to take us a little time to restore it to safety together.
