President Goldsmith Discusses Goals for Stony Brook Southampton with The Southampton Press

Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith conducted a Q&A with The Southampton Press where she outlined her vision for Stony Brook Southampton, from short-term projects to long-term plans.

In the in-person interview with Dan Stark, published August 31, Goldsmith noted that the goals for Southampton are integrated into the university's ASPIRE 2035 strategic plan, which she unveiled in her inaugural address in April.

"In community service and outreach, we want this campus to really be a vibrant part of the community that provides intellectual and cultural engagement," said Goldsmith, identifying events like the Summer Jazz Festival and programming led by the Lichtenstein Center. "So we want people to view this campus like any world-class research university provides enrichment to the local community - that's what this campus should provide."

Goldsmith pointed to the School of Health Professions' speech-language pathology, physical therapy and physician assistant programs offered on the campus, adding that Stony Brook is looking to grow its program in social welfare. Southampton offers continuing education opportunities, and works with students in local high schools through the Stony Brook Future Scholars Program.

She also noted the important research done by the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in areas like marine science, aquaculture, sustainability and environmental science. Goldsmith said Stony Brook wants to "grow the intersection of health care and environmental science and atmospheric science," mentioning the Regional Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, one of the leading such centers in the country.

Goldsmith said she has discussed the future of Stony Brook Southampton with the Southampton Advisory Committee, covering education, research, healthcare, and community service and outreach, as well as near-term, medium-term and long-term actions, including a 10-year master facilities plan. That includes bringing down all the condemned buildings and renovating or building new buildings, restoring the windmill, and possibly restoring Southampton Hall as a convening space.

"It's a beautiful place," Goldsmith said of the Southampton campus. "It's got a long history, it's got a wonderful community surrounding it. Those are all things that I don't know why previous Stony Brook presidents didn't necessarily view it as such an amazing asset in the same way that I do. But from just looking at pictures of it and then coming here and looking around and seeing it, it's an inspiring place. It's a place where ideas ignite, where people convene, where amazing research has happened, where education has happened, this is an incredible resource for Stony Brook University."
