23 Cambodian Scholars Awarded EU Higher Education Degrees in Water, Energy, and Digital Technology

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - 31 July 2026 - H.E. Igor Driesmans, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, alongside H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, co-hosted a Pre-Departure Ceremony and Alumni Gathering at Novotel Phnom Penh to officially send off 23 Cambodian scholars departing for higher education across Europe. The event-also attended by H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, and representatives from Ministry of Mines and Energy-celebrated awardees pursuing master's and specialized degrees in key development sectors including water management, energy, digital technology, and joint master courses or programmes.

The gathering brought together over 150 participants, including more than 80 Erasmus+ alumni, EU Member States representatives, and European business leaders to celebrate academic achievement and build stronger, long-term educational connections between Cambodia and Europe. Supported through the EU's Global Gateway strategy, this year's awardees will undertake studies across practical growth fields, including 9 scholars under Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees, 5 scholars in Global Gateway Scholarships for Water Professions, 7 scholars pursuing Energy Dual Degrees, and 2 scholars under European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Digital Scholarships.

Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Igor Driesmans, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, emphasized the value of international academic exchange:

These scholarships represent our commitment to strengthening Cambodia's skilled workforce and building lasting connections between our regions. Whether mastering science, technology, engineering, mathematics, energy, or environmental sciences, these awardees will gain skills essential for the country's growth-opening high-value career paths, including opportunities with European businesses operating right here in Cambodia. We wish them safe travels to Europe and look forward to seeing the impact they will make upon their return."

Beyond celebrating the departing awardees, the evening also marked the official introduction of the new leadership board for the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association of Cambodia (EMA-Cam), highlighting the active role past graduates play in maintaining strong relations.
