AEP Transmission Announces Route Selection for Power Grid Upgrades in Madison County

GAHANNA, Ohio - After gathering input from residents and local leaders this spring, AEP Transmission and Ohio Power Company have announced a proposed route for new transmission lines in Madison County.

The Patina-Mirkwood Transmission Project will deliver power to a new customer facility, with the customer covering all costs for the connections between the substation and their site. The project also provides additional electric capacity to support future economic development and growth in the area.

The project involves upgrading the electric transmission grid by:

  • Building two substations:
    • Patina Station, near State Route 38 and Rosedale-Plain City Road.
    • Mirkwood Station, near State Route 161 and Cemetery Pike.
  • Installing two parallel 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission power lines, stretching about 12.5 miles each, connecting Patina and Mirkwood stations. AEP Transmission has selected a preferred route that minimizes impacts to the community and environment.
  • Making upgrades that connect AEP Transmission's system and customer equipment to the electric grid.

The project team plans to submit applications to the Ohio Power Siting Board beginning in early 2027 seeking approval for the project transmission lines and stations. Pending approval, crews plan to begin construction in spring 2027 and conclude in late 2029.
