Pallone Secures $800K for Rail Safety Study in Monmouth County, Targeting Dangerous Train Intersections

Long Branch, NJ - Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-06) today announced $800,000 in federal funding for New Jersey Transit to tackle rail-highway grade crossing safety between Long Branch and Bradley Beach. The study, funded through the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) Railroad Crossing Elimination (RCE) Grant Program, will focus on improving safety at 29 crossings along this busy rail corridor-known for its mix of commuter and pedestrian traffic.

"This federal investment is about keeping New Jerseyans safe and cutting down on dangerous rail crossings, especially considering the high number of pedestrian strikes in New Jersey in recent months," said Pallone. "Anyone who's traveled this stretch knows how important it is to prevent accidents and ease the headaches these intersections can cause. This study will give us the data and solutions we need to fix problem areas, whether that's closures or new safety measures. Thanks to the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we're making investments in safer, more efficient transit across New Jersey. Rail is the backbone of New Jersey's economy and keeping it safe benefits everyone-from pedestrians to commuters to local businesses."

The study will collect data, rank crossing risks, and propose safety solutions, including possible closures or upgrades. There were several fatal pedestrian strikes by NJ Transit trains in Central Jersey last year. New Jersey Transit will contribute a 20% local match for the planning effort. This funding is part of a $1.16 billion national investment under the RCE program, which aims to eliminate rail crossing hazards and improve mobility for both people and goods.
