We are very excited to share that Jonathan Weisman will be joining National as an assistant editor.
This marks an exciting return to editing for Jonathan, who is coming off a terrific three-year run as a correspondent for the Politics desk. He brings a wide body of knowledge of not just politics but economics and domestic policy that is going to be indispensable to National as we enter Donald Trump's second term.
Jonathan was an editor in Washington from 2017 to 2021 overseeing coverage of Congress and domestic policy. He showed an impressive range in his work with reporters, in both subject and place, so he is going to fit right in on National. There was the unforgettable story of a school in Louisiana that doctored students' college applications; a definitive account of the race to develop a coronavirus vaccine; a look at landowners in Texas who don't want a border wall; and a dive into some of the widest educational disparities in the country in Charlottesville, Va.
Jonathan came to The Times in late 2011 from The Wall Street Journal, where he had covered the Obama White House and national politics. Before The Journal, he had covered economic policy, Congress and the Obama campaign from 2002 to 2008 at The Washington Post.
Jonathan loves editing for all the right reasons: He cares deeply about the success of reporters and is eager to get back to shepherding ideas and having those long, great conversations that yield just the right framing.
Says Erica Green, who worked with Jonathan in Washington: "There are many skills that make Jonathan a great editor. But I think at the top of the list is that he is a reporter first - one who knows how to bring out the best in reporters when they're pursuing the biggest, most complex stories. It wasn't just his ability to deftly sharpen ledes and elevate nutgrafs. It was also his encouragement to trust my instincts, retain my voice and approach my stories with ambition and courage."
Jonathan will continue to be based in Chicago and starts today. Please join us in welcoming him.
