NASSAU, The Bahamas -- An historic event took place on Monday, March 30, 2026 when The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and the Federal Republic of Germany signed an agreement to further strengthen ties, and forge cultural exchanges.
A Sister-Cities Agreement linked the Caribbean city of Nassau, The Bahamas, with its namesake European city of Nassau, Germany, and revived a relationship steeped in a shared history dating back centuries.
A press conference and signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation (MOTIA) conference room underscored the importance of the partnership, which is to focus on cultural exchange and economic empowerment. The initiative is being held under the theme: 'Bridging Cultures, Strengthening Connections.'
Present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper; Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Ginger Moxey; Director General of Tourism Latia Duncombe; MOTIA Permanent Secretary Lisa Adderley-Anderson; Mayor of Nassau, Germany, Manuel Liguori and other invited guests. Gifts were exchanged in a show of mutual kindness and respect.
The agreement linked the historical connection between the two cities, noting that Nassau, Bahamas, was named after Nassau an der Lahn, Germany in 1694 in honour of King William III of England, a member of the House of Nassau.
DPM Cooper expressed optimism about the partnership, noting hopes for a lasting relationship where both countries can learn from each other and that the agreement will deliver meaningful results.
He also noted that the arrangement "could drive gains in tourism, business engagement and knowledge exchange". And, stressed the need for measurable results, including increased visitor arrivals, cultural collaboration and commercial activity, rather than a purely symbolic relationship.
The agreement creates a formal partnership focused on cultural exchange, economic collaboration, education, youth development and environmental sustainability. It is also expected to strengthen tourism ties and expand trade opportunities between the two communities.
The agreement comes after efforts to revive the connection, which began in 2021. It now commits both communities to cultural exchange, economic development, education and environmental sustainability - spanning Nassau to Grand Bahama and beyond.
The renewed Town Twinning Agreement will strengthen cooperation across four key areas:
Cultural Exchange, deepening engagement in arts, heritage, and education to strengthen mutual understanding; Economic Development, supporting tourism linkages, trade opportunities, and innovation-led growth; Education and Youth Engagement, creating opportunities for academic exchange and programmes that encourage global awareness and connection; and, Environmental Sustainability, advancing shared approaches to address the challenges that affect all.
Nassau, Germany, is located in the western part of the European nation. It is a town of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, on the lower course of the Lahn River.
