Sept. 2, 2025 Have an idea to improve your Salt Lake City neighborhood? The best ideas often come from outside city hall. Salt Lake City is currently accepting applications from residents, neighborhood groups, and neighborhood business district organizations for its Capital Improvement Program (CIP) through 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Each year, the City sets aside funding for big projects dedicated to building and improving public spaces like parks, streets, sidewalks, and City-owned facilities that make Salt Lake City a better place to live, work, and play. Application requests are a chance for constituents to get involved and submit ideas that reflect what they think the community needs. What kind of projects can be funded? To qualify for CIP, proposed projects must: Cost at least $50,000 Have a useful life of five years or longer Be on or improve a City-owned asset Include community outreach Projects that involve equipment purchases or regular maintenance-like vehicles, a fire engine, fixing a leaking roof, or painting park benches-do not qualify unless part of a larger infrastructure project. How it works Proposed projects take at least one year to go through the CIP process. After ideas are submitted, they're reviewed by City departments for potential collaboration and an advisory board, then recommended to the Mayor and City Council during the annual budget process. Funding for proposed projects is competitive and decided by the City Council in late summer of each year. Examples of the 32 CIP projects recently approved in August for the current FY2025-26 include: Repairing and dredging Liberty Lake in Liberty Park Installing shade cloths or sails at five playgrounds Making building improvements to Fisher Mansion Implementing traffic calming improvements to make it safer for residents walking and cycling on 600 East between 900 South and South Temple Updating the Riverside Park basketball court to make it more user-friendly Need help applying?
