Construction Prompts Weekend Lane Closure on Interstate 24 in Hamilton County

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Drivers traveling on I-24 in Hamilton County should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will have a temporary impact on traffic. As part of Phase 2 (the second of two projects) to widen and improve the I-75 at I-24 interchange, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) contract crews will conduct lane closures on I-24 in both directions on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 9 AM to midnight local time for construction activities. The closures will take place on I-24 West from the I-75 South Exit ramp to Germantown Road, and on I-24 East from mile marker 183 to mile marker 185. Exit 184 on I-24 West will be closed during this time; traffic will be directed to Exit 183.

Additionally, on Sunday, December 14, at 9 PM through Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 6 AM local time, the far-right lane on I-24 West will be closed to the South Moore Road Exit onto North Terrace. The contractor will also close two lanes on North Terrace to the South Moore Road intersection for construction activities. Traffic on North Terrace will yield to traffic coming from I-24 West at Exit 184 (South Moore Road).

This work is weather-dependent. Should inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances cause delays, it will be rescheduled to take place at a later date. Uniformed police officers will be present to assist with traffic control and law enforcement.

As always, drivers are reminded to use all motorist information tools wisely and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before leaving for your destination. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on a cell phone while behind the wheel. Get the latest construction activity traffic updates from the TDOT SmartWay Map. Travelers can also call 511 for statewide travel information.

The Move Over Law was passed in 2006. The penalty for violating the law in Tennessee carries the possibility of up to 30 days in jail and a maximum fine of up to $500.
