Israeli attack on Doha, Qatar

The Brazilian government strongly condemns the attack carried out today, September 9, by Israel against a residential area in the city of Doha, the capital of Qatar.

The Brazilian government conveys to the State of Qatar its solidarity in the face of the Israeli attack, which constitutes a flagrant violation of Qatar's sovereignty and of the most fundamental principles of international law.

This action-taking place amidst the continuation of Israeli military offensives against the territories of the State of Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria-threatens to trigger a new escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

By targeting members of the Hamas political leadership involved in negotiations mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, the attack also undermines efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Brazil urges all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and calls upon the Israeli government to immediately cease military actions against countries in the region. It further reiterates its appeal for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from that territory, the immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and the remainder of the territory of the State of Palestine, as well as in the territories of Lebanon and Syria, the release of the remaining hostages, and the immediate lifting of all restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid.

Recalling the need for full respect for United Nations resolutions demanding the immediate end of the occupation of Palestinian territory, Brazil expresses its conviction that peace and stability in the Middle East depend on the implementation of the two-state solution, with an independent and viable State of Palestine living side by side with Israel, in peace and security, within the 1967 borders, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
