Due to warm temperatures and anticipated strong winds across the territory, the Government of Yukon is extending the season for wildland firefighting crews. This move will ensure the Yukon's ability to respond to fires.
Typically, Yukon wildfire crew members are contracted to work until the end of August. This year, some crew members will continue until at least September 12, 2025, depending on weather. Crew leaders will remain in place until September 26 as per usual.
Additionally, two helicopters will remain on contract, ready to assist with aerial firefighting efforts as long as conditions remain hot and dry.
Over the past week, four newly reported wildfires have been confirmed to be human caused. Smoke may also become more visible on the interior of existing fires on the landscape. Even as the colours change, fuels in the forest remain dry.
People should follow established burning rules and be extra cautious when using campfires. Small sparks or unattended fires can quickly escalate under these dry, windy conditions.
Please remember to practise safe campfire habits:
If people see smoke or unattended fires, they should call the reporting line at 1-888-798-FIRE (3473). Early reporting can prevent small incidents from becoming large-scale wildfires.
With ongoing warm and windy conditions, we are taking proactive steps to keep Yukoners and their communities safe. A huge thanks to the crew members who continue to work hard this season to keep us safe. We're also asking everyone to do their part - simple actions, such as properly extinguishing campfires, can make a big difference. Together, we can help prevent human-caused wildfires.
