What do bug lovers, sketch comedians, and beatboxers have in common? They all have a place at Splash!-Boston University's semiannual club fair. Splash is a great way to get acquainted with some of the hundreds of BU extracurricular groups, meet friends, and experience all that the University has to offer. Splash will be held on Nickerson Field on Saturday, September 6, from noon to 2:30 pm.
Margaret Babson, director of the Student Leadership & Impact Center-a consolidation of the Community Service Center and the Student Activities Office-says about 460 student organizations will be represented and that the event is a "prime opportunity to connect with other people and learn how to get involved."
Tables will be arranged on the field by club type, so if you have a specific organization in mind, look for its color-matched section, indicated by large balloons. Expect to see a mixture of preprofessional organizations, club sports teams, community service opportunities, cultural clubs, sororities, fraternities, and other student groups. A DJ will provide the soundtrack, and many organizations will hand out swag.
Carol Orellana (CGS'24, Sargent'26) recalls attending her first Splash freshman year. She says that while it can be a bit of a sensory overload, the color-coded balloons helped her to find her way around.
"Don't sign up just for things that will look good on your résumé," Orellana says. "Do what you find interesting."
To save a bit of time and stress, Anika Pisal (CAS'26) recommends doing some research before Splash-Terrier Central is a great place to start. In addition to a daily event calendar, the site lists all registered organizations on campus, with a short description of each.
"You may end up signing up for clubs you won't attend," Pisal says. "Don't feel pressured to join a club just because your friends are."
Splash draws thousands of undergraduates, so come prepared for a crowd. And Babson reminds students that Splash is held rain or shine. "Be sure to bring sunscreen, a water bottle, and depending on the weather, a jacket," she says.
The club fair is a great way to get acquainted with BU, experience all the school has to offer, and make lifelong connections.
