William & Mary's largest academic unit has officially adopted a new name: the College of Arts & Sciences.

With this change, the university affirms the central role of the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural and health sciences in preparing students to lead lives of impact and purpose in their communities, in their careers and in the future of democracy.

"This is more than a name change," said W&M Provost Peggy Agouris. "It represents the essence of Arts & Sciences: a vibrant intellectual community that bridges disciplines and inspires the next generation of thinkers, leaders and engaged citizens."

The new name brings greater clarity, reflects a student-centered and research-driven mission and aligns with Vision 2026, William & Mary's strategic plan. As the university helps lead the nation toward its 250th anniversary, it continues to serve as a national leader in the liberal arts and sciences, preparing graduates to meet the challenges of a changing world. The change, effective July 15, was approved by the university's Board of Visitors in April and by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia this summer. It replaces the former designation Faculty of Arts & Sciences.

To mark the occasion, the College of Arts & Sciences (the College) is also launching a new storytelling initiative that will highlight the people who bring its mission to life every day. Through this ongoing series, students, faculty, staff and alumni will share stories that reflect the College's role in fostering curiosity and civic responsibility.

"As we move forward under this new name, we are also embracing a shared vision," said Suzanne Raitt, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. "We want to celebrate the people of the College and their role in building a more just, thoughtful and vibrant world."

As the academic home for more than 40 departments and programs including eight graduate programs, the College of Arts & Sciences serves nearly every undergraduate at William & Mary. It also helps drive graduate programs and research across campus.

"The College of Arts & Sciences continues to demonstrate its enduring value," shared Lisa Roday HON '23, P '13, P '14, chair of the Council of Arts & Sciences, the College's philanthropic advisory board. "Powered by dedicated faculty who inspire curiosity, challenge assumptions, and mentor the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and creators. It comes alive through students who engage deeply across disciplines, learning to ask meaningful questions, bridge differences, and solve real-world problems. Together, those who teach and learn in the College form the heart of a dynamic community, preparing for lives of purpose and impact in a changing world."

Raitt believes now more than ever in the power of people and the importance of a liberal arts and sciences education. "At this crucial time in our nation's history, we continue to lead the way. Rooted in Williamsburg, the historic center of the nation's founding, we are focused on the future. Our trajectory reflects the enduring promise of a liberal arts and sciences education: through knowledge, dialogue and shared purpose, people can shape a better world together."
