HSBC colleagues and community partners came together at Bella Abzug Park in Hudson Yards to mark the start of New York City's dragon boat festival season at the Dragon Boat Awakening (Eye Dotting) Ceremony on Wednesday, 15 July.
The ceremony officially opened the 36th Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York City. As part of a long-standing tradition, the "awakening" ritual symbolically brings the dragon boats to life and is held to promote good luck, safety and prosperity ahead of the racing season.

Vance Young, Head of End User Services, demonstrated Praying Mantis martial arts.
The program also included a blessing of the dragon boats by Taoist priests from the Eastern United States Taoist Association of Flushing. Vance Young, Head of End User Services Operations, delivered Praying Mantis martial arts demonstrations and cultural drumming performances.

Festival weekend: 8-9 August 2026
The 2026 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York City will take place on 8-9 August at Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The festival is expected to feature more than 180 teams and bring together thousands of athletes, spectators and visitors, with racing beginning at 8:00 a.m.
