The City of Norman successfully hosted a three-day specialized training focused on alternative fuel and electric vehicle safety, preparing first responders and municipal personnel for the unique challenges these evolving technologies present.
As the use of compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied propane gas (LPG), lithium-ion batteries, and electric and hybrid vehicles continues to grow, emergency response agencies are adapting to new risks and operational considerations. The comprehensive training provided participants with critical instruction in fire safety, hazard recognition, scene management, and vehicle stabilization.
The training took place February 24-26 at Fire Station 7 with six sessions offered over three days. Two sessions were held each day to accommodate shift schedules and ensure broad participation from City staff.
Nearly 200 attendees participated in the training. Participants included City of Norman personnel as well as representatives from the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, University of Oklahoma Police Department staff, the Oklahoma Department of Labor, staff from Max Westheimer Airport, Oklahoma State University Fire Service Training, and municipalities including Oklahoma City, Moore, Edmond, Tulsa, Blanchard, and Chickasha.
Participants learned from two highly experienced instructors:
Course topics included "Alternative Fueled Vehicle Fires and Fireground Management" and "Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: Design, Dangers, and Response Strategies."
The sessions focused on fire suppression tactics, responder safety, vehicle stabilization, and risk mitigation strategies for firefighters, police officers, and City employees who operate, service, or tow alternatively fueled vehicles as part of their duties.
The first session on February 24 was recorded and will be made available on YouTube.
City officials emphasized that the strong turnout and regional participation reflect Norman's ongoing commitment to public safety and proactive preparedness.
"By investing in advanced training and partnering with regional agencies, we are ensuring our responders are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect our community and one another," Safety Manager Mike Anderson said. "This collaboration will pay dividends for years to come."
The City of Norman extends its appreciation to all participating agencies and instructors for their dedication to improving emergency response and public safety across the region.
