Los Angeles, Calif. (October 27, 2025) - Lewis Brisbois is pleased to welcome Brenda Ligorsky to its Los Angeles office as a partner in its Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Practices. Ms. Ligorsky, who joins Lewis Brisbois from Kelly, Trotter & Franzen, has more than three decades of experience in the area of professional liability defense, particularly cases involving birth injuries and other catastrophic damages.
Ms. Ligorsky's clients include physicians, medical groups, hospitals, HMOs, and other health care providers, who she has successfully defended in both state and federal court in cases involving medical negligence, battery, fraud, elder and dependent adult abuse, bad faith, and products liability. Ms. Ligorsky has a particular interest in defending health care professionals against claims of elder and dependent adult abuse. Since 1997, she has been working to develop legal defenses to elder and dependent adult abuse claims, often working in concert with certified appellate specialists. She has secured several published appellate decisions, including in the seminal case of Carter v. Prime Health Care Paradise Valley LLC, 198 Cal.App.4th 396 (2011), a matter involving allegations of elder abuse in a hospital. She also recently secured an appellate victory in a Medicare preemption matter in which the California Supreme Court published an opinion that resolved a conflict of law in favor of the defense. Ms. Ligorsky noted, "I like developing new approaches to old problems." In recent years, Ms. Ligorsky has focused the elder abuse portion of her practice on representing hospitals. "It's a niche within the defense of elder abuse claims to focus on issues that are unique to hospitals. That's where the Carter case arose," she explained.
In discussing her decision to join Lewis Brisbois, Ms. Ligorsky explained that the firm's "national practice, resources, quality of work, and professionalism" appealed to her. There was also an exciting synergy between the work she does, and the work being done by the Healthcare, Medical Malpractice, and Long-Term Care teams at Lewis Brisbois. She elaborated, "For years, I have been co-counsel on cases with Lewis Brisbois and have seen the exceptionally good work that they do. If I was going to join a new firm, this was my only choice."
Los Angeles Co-Managing Partner and Co-Chair of Lewis Brisbois' Healthcare, Medical Malpractice, and Long-Term Care Practices Kathleen Walker expressed enthusiasm about Ms. Ligorsky's arrival, noting, "Brenda has over 30 years of experience representing healthcare clients in complex litigation involving challenging issues. She is particularly skilled in defending hospitals in elder abuse cases and her skill set is a wonderful addition to expand our already strong group of healthcare litigators in this specialty practice group. Brenda's deep knowledge and strong track record of success will benefit our clients in California and throughout the country. We are looking forward to working with her."
Ms. Ligorsky earned her law degree from USC Gould School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Tufts University. She is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in California.
