Social Media scams prevalent during Festival Season

April 13, 2026

Office of Community & Business Relations shares tips and reminders

Every Spring brings a myriad of activities and events to Norman, the "City of Festivals!" If not hosting, the City of Norman may partner with organizations or offer in-kind support for these types of events. While community members research local happenings, it is important to remain vigilant in safeguarding yourself against scams.

"Event organizers and the City of Norman have a vested interest in protecting the community," said Sara Kaplan, Chief Community & Business Relations Officer. "Interest and involvement from residents set Norman apart and make local events really special - we just want to ensure everyone remains safe in doing so."

Scams can look like potential vendor registration or solicitations online. They are often initiated though comments or messages on social media platforms from people posing as event organizers. Community members should double check and rely only on established websites with detailed vendor and registration information. It is critical to verify that you are in communication with the proper contacts before sending payments or personal information.

Red flags to watch for:

  • Be wary of any comments from individuals on social media channels offering last-minute vendor opportunities.
  • Use extra caution when utilizing peer-to-peer payment services (Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, Paypal)
  • Be wary wire transfer, gift cards, or other unusual payment requests
  • Messages from personal email or social media accounts, or instructions to pay a personal name or account that does not clearly match the event organizer.
  • Pressure to pay quickly in order to "hold" a vendor space before you can verify the request.

Questions about local events can be directed to the Community & Business Relations Division at 405-366-5257. Those who feel they have fallen victim to a scam can contact the Norman Police Department at 405-321-1444.
