Richard Fontaine Statement on the Passing of CNAS Board Member Richard L. Armitage

Washington, April 15, 2025 - Today, Center for a New American Security (CNAS) CEO Richard Fontaine issued the following statement on the passing of Board Member Richard L. Armitage:

"We at CNAS are deeply saddened by the passing of Richard L. Armitage. Ambassador Armitage was a tremendous person in all ways: a leader, a statesman, and a legendary public servant. He served on the Center's board from its founding in 2007 and believed deeply in its mission. He was also a generous mentor to a generation of future leaders.

"Ambassador Armitage was a commanding presence, whether in the workout room or in the corridors of power. He began his career with three combat tours in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for bravery. In the chaotic weeks leading up to the fall of Saigon, he successfully organized the evacuation of tens of thousands of South Vietnamese navy personnel and civilians. It was just one example of his casual heroism.

"Ambassador Armitage served as deputy Secretary of State in the George W. Bush administration, playing a critical role in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks. He also served in senior posts in both the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations. At CNAS, he co-chaired the task force on the U.S.-India relationship and remained a deep source of expertise and wisdom on Asia policy and more.

"It's hard to imagine my own life and career without the clear-eyed guidance, steady hand, and warm friendship of Rich Armitage. We at CNAS will always be grateful for his service on our board and to our country."
