European Languages Café 2026

On Thursday 1 October 2026, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Thailand and Alliance Française Bangkok, along with 18 EU Member States embassies and cultural institutes including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Goethe Institut, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden, invite you to the European Languages Café - an afternoon where the languages and cultures of Europe come to one place in the middle of Bangkok.

EU Member States embassies and cultural institutes will each set up a table staffed by native speakers of diverse European Languages. Admission is free, and no prior knowledge of any European language is required.

Why this event takes place

☕ Every year on 26 September, we mark the European Day of Languages. Its purpose is to celebrate the languages spoken across Europe and to encourage people of all ages to learn them.

Linguistic diversity is at the heart of the European Union's motto "United in Diversity". It strengthens cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and inclusion, core values of the EU. There are about 225 indigenous languages spoken across Europe. Twenty-four of them are official languages of the EU.

What happens at the European Languages Café

️The country tables: 20 tables, each hosted by an EU Member State embassy or cultural institute in Thailand. Every table is designed by the country itself. You can expect to interact with native speakers, take part in games, quizzes, calligraphy, music, folk traditions, and plenty of conversation.

Your event passport: Every visitor receives an event passport and 1 free drink coupon at the door. Visit a table, take part in its activity, and you earn a stamp. It is a simple paper with a real purpose: it encourages visitors to learn more about new languages and cultural aspects that you would not otherwise have approached.

The lucky draw: Collect at least 5 stamps in your event passport, present it at the lucky draw table, and claim your gift. Everyone will surely get a gift to take back home!

☕ Coffee and European snacks: One complimentary soft drink such as coffee, tea or soda is available for participants. The Café in the name is not decorative - the event is built around the idea that the best conversations happen with something in your hands.

How to register

✨ Registration is free and opens on 4 September 2026.

1. Pre-registration: 300 slots, available at https://megatix.com.au/events/european-language-caf
2. Walk-in: 100 slots available, admitted on a first-come, first-served basis from 16:00 hours.

Please note that the venue has a fixed capacity of 400 participants. Once that number is reached, we will not be able to admit further visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to speak a European language to attend?

The answer is a firm no. The Café is designed for complete beginners as much as for advanced learners. Native speakers at each table are there to introduce their language from the very first word.

Who is this event for?

Anyone with an interest in languages or European cultures. Students of European languages, university and secondary-school students, teachers, professionals working with European colleagues, and members of the general public are all welcome. Previous editions have drawn a wide mix of ages.

When should I arrive and how long should I stay?

You can arrive anytime between 16.00-18.00 hours. Most visitors need around an hour to collect the five stamps needed for the lucky draw.

Do I have to visit every table?

Not at all. Five stamps qualifies you for the lucky draw, but you are free to visit as many or as few tables as you wish.

What if I register and then cannot come?

Please cancel your registration via Megatix, so that your place can be offered to someone else. Places are limited and demand is high.

Can I come without registering?

Yes, 100 slots are available for walk-in visitors. However, entry is not guaranteed, and once the venue reaches its capacity of 400 we will have to close the doors.

Can children attend?

Yes, accompanied by an adult. The activities suit teenagers and adults best, but primary school students and children are welcome to join with a parent or guardian.

Is it really free?

Yes. Admission, activities, soft drinks and gifts are all free of charge.

Will photographs be taken?

Yes, photographs and video will be taken during the event and may be used by the organisers and participating partners for communication purposes. Please speak to a member of staff at the registration desk if you prefer not to have any photos of you taken.
