Defendant Convicted for Shooting Murder at Rancho Cordova House Party

Amyis Coogler was convicted by a jury of the second-degree murder of Corey Shearer. The jury also found true an allegation that Coogler personally discharged a firearm causing death.

On August 5, 2022, Sacramento sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting at a house party and found the victim on the lawn with four gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Witnesses provided a description of the shooter who had fled the scene. Video footage showed Coogler hiding in a neighbor's backyard soon after the murder. DNA collected from evidence matched Coogler, including a firearm that was determined to be used in the shooting.

Coogler faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for April 10, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Department 10 before the Honorable Ernest Sawtelle.
