EUMAM MOZ awards the Chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces

Maputo, Mozambique - The European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ) awarded the Chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces, General Júlio dos Santos Jane, during a ceremony held yesterday, 2 June, at the Headquarters of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM).

The medal, presented by the Director of the European Union Military Planning and Conduct Capability (DMPCC) and EUMAM MOZ Commander, Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, representing the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Police, Kaja Kallas, is a distinction that recognises the contribution of the Chief of the General Staff of the FADM to strengthening military cooperation between Mozambique and the European Union, as well as the commitment of the FADM to the training, modernisation and consolidation of their operational capabilities.

This moment symbolises the spirit of partnership, trust and shared commitment to security, stability and the protection of populations, particularly in the context of the efforts being undertaken in the Cabo Delgado region.

The medal awarded to General Júlio dos Santos Jane therefore represents not only recognition of military leadership, but also the value placed on international cooperation in the service of peace and stability in Mozambique.

The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Service Medal may be awarded to either military or civilian personnel in recognition of their service to a mission conducted under the CSDP, who have demonstrated outstanding valour or have provided extraordinarily meritorious service with significant positive impact in the interest of the EUMAM MOZ.

General Júlio dos Santos Jane was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the FADM in April 2025.

EUMAM MOZ continues to play an important role in supporting specialised training, mentoring and capacity-building for the FADM, contributing to a more prepared, coordinated and effective response to the country's security challenges, particularly in the Cabo Delgado region.
