In just one year, Donald Trump's disastrous economic policies have raised prices, eliminated good-paying jobs, and put homeownership out of reach for millions of everyday Americans. Now, Trump is attempting to save face by touring the country to boast about the same failed policies that sent the economy into a tailspin.
According to new polling from The New York Times, two-thirds of voters now believe a middle-class lifestyle is out of reach for most people, and 77% say it is harder to achieve now than a generation ago. Nearly 60% also expressed concern about affording basic necessities, such as groceries, rent, and gas, while over 1-in-10 voters said they could not afford them at all. And a majority of voters believe that Trump's policies have made life less affordable for most Americans.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
"Millions of Americans believe the American dream is out of their reach because Donald Trump's economy has made an affordable, middle-class lifestyle a fantasy. Prices on groceries, gas, and rent are soaring, jobs are disappearing, health care premiums have more than doubled, and buying a home or a car feels out of reach. While Americans are forced to stretch their wallets to make ends meet, Trump is busy hosting black-tie events for his billionaire donors and building his gilded ballroom. As Trump turns his attention to everything except the struggles of working families, Democrats are ready to deliver for everyday Americans by lowering costs and making life more affordable."
Despite Trump claiming just last week that "people are doing very well," working families are being crushed by his reckless economic policies. A new report revealed that American consumers and importers - not foreign exporters - are bearing 96% of the costs of Trump's tariffs. Energy prices have skyrocketed, housing prices are soaring, and during Trump's first year back in office, families lost $1,625 due to Trump's tariffs, including $310 on grocery costs alone. A record share of Americans are also facing soaring car prices, as more than 20% of Americans agreed to pay more than $1,000 per month for a new car loan at the end of last year.
Nearly 70% of Americans are struggling to make ends meet - it's no wonder Trump is 29 points underwater on his handling of the cost of living.
