The Pomona City Council has rejected a proposal that would have increased relocation payments for certain no-fault evictions under the city's rent control and eviction ordinance.

City staff had recommended changing the current formula - which bases relocation amounts on the number of years a tenant has occupied a unit - to a tiered structure tied to the number of bedrooms. The proposal would have raised payments by as much as $4,000 in some cases and replaced the existing calculation method with a new framework.

The council declined to move forward with the change, keeping the current relocation structure in place.

Matt Buck, vice president of public affairs for the California Apartment Association in Los Angeles County, said the decision avoids additional costs and administrative complications for housing providers.

Last year, when the council adopted the city's rent control ordinance, it set annual allowable rent increases at 5%, up from an earlier 4% proposal, and declined to establish a rent registry program.

The council is expected to revisit relocation requirements later this year before the ordinance is scheduled to sunset in December.
