Whip Clark Statement on the Supreme Court's Undermining of the Voting Rights Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-5) issued the following statement after the Supreme Court released its ruling in Louisiana v. Callais:

"The protections secured by the Voting Rights Act were earned through the blood, sweat, and sacrifice of trailblazers in the Civil Rights Movement, including my friend and mentor John Lewis.

"Today, Donald Trump's right-wing Supreme Court has delivered a blow to that hard-won progress by disenfranchising Black Americans and empowering states to conduct racial gerrymandering with near impunity. This decision coincides with Republicans' unprecedented attacks on our democracy and attempts to 'nationalize' our elections, silence the voices of millions of voters, and rig our electoral system in their favor.

"While this decision is a setback, it does not mark the end of our fight for free and fair elections. As we approach the midterms, House Democrats will deploy every tool at our disposal to ensure the American people's votes are secure in November. Our mission remains the same: empowering every eligible voter to cast their ballot and elect the leaders of their choice."
