How Much Downside Is Left In Vertiv Stock

Vertiv (VRT) shares have fallen 20% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 gained about 4%. The stock's 9.7% drop over the past month came without any new financial results, as the company last reported on July 29, 2026. So how far did Vertiv drop when the market fell?

What Did Vertiv Lose When Stocks Sold Off Before?

The company has navigated five market shocks since 2020, losing an average of 43.7% compared with an 18.3% decline for the S&P 500. A fall from a new market shock would add to the losses investors have already taken. If the stock repeated its 43.7% average fall from here, it would sit about 55% below its level three months ago.

The deepest of those five downturns occurred during the 2022 inflation shock and Fed tightening, when Vertiv lost 66%, and the S&P 500 lost about 25%. That stretch included one day in February 2022 when the share price fell about 37%, so the drop was not purely a market fall. During the pandemic sell-off, the stock lost 59% against 34% for the index.

Vertiv eventually returned to its pre-shock high after all five events. Measured from the bottom, the median recovery took 1.4 months. The 2022 fall proved to be the slowest turnaround, taking 12.0 months to recover. Historical performance offers no guarantee about the next downturn.

How Vertiv's Business Compares With Its Own Past

Operationally, Vertiv generates more sales than it did a year ago and retains a larger portion of each transaction than it did three years ago. Its revenue over the last twelve months reached $11.5 billion, up from $9.1 billion a year earlier. Products, the larger of its two offerings, brought in $8.2 billion in fiscal 2025, against $6.2 billion the year before.

The company posted an operating margin of 19.4% over the last twelve months, about double the 9.6% recorded three years ago. Vertiv also owes little: its debt equals 3.4% of its market value, against 20.8% for the S&P 500. Yet the stock trades at 56.2 times earnings compared with 21.5 for the index.

What Is Getting Harder For Vertiv Right Now?

During the July 29, 2026 call, management said some second-quarter revenue in the Americas shifted to later periods, though executives called the shifts minor. The company blamed multiphase projects and temporary supply chain congestion, noting that its projects keep getting larger and require a lot of coordination.

Organic sales in EMEA, its Europe, Middle East and Africa region, fell 2% in the second quarter. On the July 29 call, management said it expected organic sales growth there to return in the second half of 2026.

Yet in July, management guided for total sales to rise. It forecast third-quarter net sales of $3.65 billion to $3.85 billion, against the $3.27 billion it reported for the second quarter. When Vertiv reports the third quarter, net sales below $3.65 billion would mean it missed the low end of its own guidance.

How To Act On VRT?

Now you know VRT better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
