CAL FIRE CZU plans to conduct a 10-acre prescribed pile burn near the Kings Mountain Archery Range in Huddart Park beginning Mon., April 28, weather permitting. The operation is expected to take three days to remove vegetation piles, including dead trees, along Kings Mountain and Archery Fire Roads to improve evacuation routes for area residents.
The vegetation piles are the result of CAL FIRE CZU and California Conservation Crews work, in coordination with San Mateo County Parks, to thin a dense Douglas fir stand along the travel route. The prescribed pile burn is located within the Kings Mountain Road Emergency Shaded Fuel Break, a fuel reduction project initiated under Gov. Gavin Newsom's 2019 emergency declaration. CAL FIRE identified 35 high-priority fuel reduction projects statewide as part of that initiative.
Smoke may be visible in the area from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day of the burn. Firefighters will extinguish the piles at the end of the day and monitor the area afterward. CAL FIRE CZU has obtained a smoke management plan from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
