California Governor Signs Fusion Energy Bill Into Law, Strengthening the State's Leadership in the Global Fusion Race

New Law Requires Strategic Plan for Fusion

As energy needs surge, we face a critical challenge: delivering reliable, sustainable power that strengthens America's energy independence. Fusion has the potential to meet that need. For more than 70 years, California has led the nation in advancing fusion energy. The signing of Senate Bill 925 (SB 925) re-commits California to its longstanding leadership in fusion science and supports the state's rapidly expanding commercial sector.

SB 925 directs the California Energy Commission to develop a statewide strategy for advancing fusion research, bringing the technology to market, and creating a clearer path for siting and constructing future facilities.

The opportunity is significant. More than $14 billion in private investment has been committed to fusion companies globally, with California home to the largest private and public fusion ecosystem in the United States. That ecosystem is built on decades of research know-how, world-class scientific and engineering capabilities, leading universities, and advanced manufacturing.

The right policies, incentives and resources will position California to capture the breakthroughs, investment and jobs emerging from this fast-growing field. Recent analysis shows the state's fusion sector could generate more than $125 billion in economic impact and support up to 43,000 jobs over the next decade.

General Atomics was proud to sponsor SB 925 and work with Senator Jerry McNerney to advance the legislation. As the global race for commercial fusion intensifies, the decisions made now will determine where the next generation of breakthroughs, investment and jobs take root. With a clear strategy and sustained commitment, California can lead the world toward a future powered by abundant energy while creating lasting economic opportunities across the state.
