CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Oct. 5, 2026): Crescent Communities, a nationally recognized, market-leading real estate investor, developer, and operator of mixed-use communities, in partnership with Nuveen Real Estate, are marking a major milestone for One Independence Center, where the global investment management firm, Capital Group, is establishing its East Coast operations hub.
Capital Group celebrated their arrival with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 29 with Gov. Josh Stein and N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley. The firm will occupy approximately 200,000 square feet across the top eight floors at the 20-story office tower at Trade and Tryon streets, with eventual office amenities to include an employee cafeteria, a coffee bar, conference rooms, and a multipurpose room for training and events. The commitment represents one of Uptown Charlotte's largest office leases in recent years and reflects the strength of Crescent Communities and Nuveen Real Estate's investment in transforming One Independence Center into a modern, experience-driven workplace destination.
With a projected in-office capacity of 1,000 people, Capital Group's expansion in Charlotte is expected to create over 600 new high-paying jobs across data, technology, operations, and global business services functions by 2031, with average salaries of $194,141. The firm's move is projected to have a 12-year statewide economic impact of $5.2 billion.
"Charlotte continues to attract world-class companies, but what's especially meaningful here is where they choose to land," said Sagar Rathie, Managing Director at Crescent Communities. "One Independence Center offers a differentiated experience - blending design, connectivity, and lifestyle amenities - and this decision reinforces that leading organizations are prioritizing environments that support their people and long-term growth. More broadly, Capital Group's $60 million investment in Charlotte signals continued momentum for the city as a hub for financial services and corporate growth."
Capital Group's selection follows a pivotal repositioning of One Independence Center by Crescent Communities and Nuveen Real Estate. This Class A office tower, designed in collaboration with ENTOS Design and Gensler, meets the evolving needs of today's workforce, pairing modern office environments with hospitality-driven amenities - including a brand-new fitness center with cardio, strength, and functional training equipment; a yoga and group fitness studio; locker rooms; filtered hydration stations; and indoor bike storage - and direct access to dining, retail, and gathering spaces in the heart of Uptown.
CBRE represented Capital Group in the transaction, with John Christenbury and Michael Fahey leading leasing efforts on behalf of the tenant. Lincoln Property Company represented ownership, with Virginia Luther and Dillard Williams leading leasing for One Independence Center.
"This is exactly the type of tenant One Independence Center is designed to attract," said Virginia Luther, Managing Director at Lincoln. "Companies today are being incredibly discerning about where they locate, and this decision speaks volumes about the building's quality, its amenity offering, and its position at the heart of Uptown."
At street level, One Independence Center is a vibrant lifestyle hub anchored by Monarch Market, an 18,000-square-foot experiential dining hall featuring a diverse mix of food vendors, full-service dining, and curated gathering spaces. The building also offers a dynamic retail mix including Sweetgreen, Coco and the Director, Portofino's, Starbucks, and MD Boutique, creating a seamless live-work-play environment for tenants.
Nationwide, Crescent Communities continues to experience significant growth with $7.2 billion of residential and commercial investments and developments in various stages of construction, operations, and planning. That pipeline includes 15,300 multi- and single-family build-to-rent units; 58,000 square feet of complementary retail space; and 7.5 million square feet of office, industrial, and life-sciences facilities. With a focus on environmental sustainability and wellness, Crescent Communities is a leading recipient of LEED, NGBS (National Green Building Standard), Fitwel, and WELL certifications.
