Onward: An interview with Olivia Lade

By Emma Cornejo
University Communications Student Assistant

MINOT, N.D. - Olivia Lade grew up in Minot, graduating from Minot High School with honors throughout her prep career.

She chose to continue her education at Minot State University as an art education major.

Recently, after finishing her first semester at MSU, University Communications connected with Lade to discuss her time here so far and why it was a good choice for her.

What are some of the reasons you chose to come to Minot State?
OL: I chose Minot State University because it's right in my hometown, so I could stay close to my family while still getting the experience of living independently. Plus, Minot State has a well-known art department, which made it an easy choice for me to pursue my passion for art while getting a good education.

Do you have an early highlight or two from your time at Minot State?
OL: Living in the dorms has allowed me to make friends quickly and easily. At the beginning of the year, my friends and I had a great time at some of the events, such as bingo and going to different sporting events. We also went ice skating for one of the MSU Life events. It was my roommates' first time going, and we both had a great time.

What opportunities has Minot State created for you?
OL: Minot State University has given me the chance to really be a part of the community. Through my classes, I've had the opportunity to teach yoga to elementary school students, which was a rewarding experience. Teaching them something new and learning new things. I've also loved how my courses have allowed me to hear firsthand stories from different artists, learning about their journeys and experiences in the art world.
What led you to major in art education?
OL: I've been passionate about art for as long as I can remember, whether it's creating something new or just appreciating the beauty of a work of art. That's why I decided to pursue a degree in art education, I want to help others discover their own creativity and love for art.

What does your future look like to you right now?
OL: I plan to continue my art education, and I'm even considering combining it with business to open more opportunities in the future. While I am not exactly sure what the future holds, I know for sure that art will always be a big part of my life, whether I am creating it, sharing it, or using it in a new way.

Tell us about yourself and how your experiences have shaped you and led you to the path that you are on.
OL: I was born and raised in Minot, where I have always had a wide range of interests. I played soccer for 11 years, and from the moment I was old enough, I was enrolled in art classes and took as many as I could. In high school, I joined the choir and quickly fell in love with it, and I also took on the role of head of costumes for a musical in my junior year. These experiences have shaped my creative side and helped me develop a deep love for the arts in various forms.

My family and friends are incredibly important to me, and they are a big reason I decided to attend Minot State University. Being close to home has allowed me to stay connected to the people who support me while also learning how to live independently.

My time at Minot State has given me opportunities to grow in my passion for art. Though I am still figuring out exactly what the future holds, I know that art will always be a central part of my life, whether it is through creating, sharing, or even combining it with business in new ways.

What do you like to do outside of the classroom: family, hobbies, or other areas of interest?
OL: I am lucky to have my family close by, and I often stop by their house for dinner to catch up and spend quality time together. When I have free time, I love making art, but most of the time, you will find me spending time together with my roommate, Caitlin. She is also an art education major, and we have become close friends this year. Honestly, I also spend a fair amount of time taking naps and binge-watching TV shows when I am not in class or working on homework. It is my way of unwinding and balancing the busyness of school life!
