Emergencies can happen anytime-whether it's a storm, power outage, or unexpected disruption.
With an emergency kit, your household can stay safe and comfortable without leaving home. If building a kit feels overwhelming, don't worry, starting small is the key.
1. Start Small, But Start Now
You don't need to buy everything at once. Begin with one category-like water or non-perishable food.
Aim to add a few items each week. A little progress is better than waiting for the "perfect" moment.
2. Water is Top Priority
Store 1 gallon of water per person per day, that's 14 gallons for one person for 2 weeks. Don't forget water for pets, too!
3. Stock Foods that Don't Need a Fridge
Think canned soups, beans, tuna, peanut butter, granola, dried fruit, crackers, or instant meals.
Include a manual can opener and utensils. Aim for familiar, shelf-stable foods your family will actually eat.
4. Make a "Grab-&-Go" List
Not everything can live in a kit. Make a checklist of items you'd need to grab quickly-medications, documents, phone chargers, glasses, comfort items for kids. Keep the list with your kit so you're not scrambling during an emergency.
5. Get to Know Your Neighbors and Get Involved in Your Community
Preparedness is better together. Share ideas, split bulk buys, or organize a neighborhood "kit build" day.
