Meticulous work by Specialized Investigations Division detectives has led to the arrest of three men, including two brothers, for gun violence last Saturday in Napier public housing and on Fain Street.
The investigation began at 8:35 a.m. last Saturday when officers responded to a shots fired call in the public housing community. No one was hit, but a residence and a vehicle were damaged. Recovered were 15 bullet casings and one live round. Then at 11:50 a.m., Derrick Booker, 43, showed up at Vanderbilt University Medical Center driving a 2024 Hyundai Palisade. Booker had a gunshot wound to his left thigh that shattered a bone. Booker was carrying a large plastic bag containing various drugs, including cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana. A pistol was recovered from the Hyundai.
The investigation shows that Booker, a convicted felon, was engaged in a suspected drug-related shootout with Maurice Maupin, 42, also a convicted felon, in the 8:35 a.m. incident. Maurice Maupin was armed with a rifle, Booker a pistol. After the shooting stopped, Maupin walked to an apartment on Cannon Street where he is alleged to have exchanged rifles with his brother, William Maupin, 45. Then, later on Saturday, Maurice Maupin is alleged to have shot into the Hyundai Palisade as Booker drove on Fain Street, wounding Booker in the leg.
Maurice Maupin surrendered at the Downtown Detention Center with an attorney this morning where he was booked on charges of felony aggravated assault, felony reckless endangerment, and two counts of unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $55,000. He has been released from custody on bond.
Maurice Maupin was convicted of selling cocaine resulting from a 2009 arrest and received a 12-year probated sentence.
William Maupin was arrested at the Cannon Street apartment Thursday night. He is charged with evidence tampering, being an accessory after the fact in last Saturday's gunfire, and felony reckless endangerment. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $35,000. He, too, has been released from custody on bond.
Booker was arrested Wednesday upon his release from the hospital and is charged with multiple drug possession counts, felony reckless endangerment for his gunfire last Saturday, unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon, and violating probation. He is jailed without bond.
Booker was convicted of two counts of domestic-related aggravated assault in January 2023 and received a five-year probated sentence. He was convicted of domestic-related aggravated assault in 2022 and received a six-year probated sentence. He was convicted of aggravated assault in 2017 and received a six-year sentence. He was convicted of aggravated robbery in 2014 and received a five-year sentence.
