HONOLULU, Aug. 17, 2026 - Hawaiian Electric is focused on stabilizing its systems on Hawaii Island, Oahu and in Maui County as crews continue repairing transmission lines, which will allow the company to then make repairs to neighborhood distribution systems and bring more customers back online.

The company appreciates everyone's patience in the aftermath of Lala's damaging winds as it swept past Hawaii Island as a hurricane and the rest of the islands as a tropical storm. Hawaiian Electric acknowledges the challenges of being without power for more than a day and assures that crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to repair damages to restore all customers. While restoration times are not readily available for specific neighborhoods, the company is committed to providing updates as soon as damage assessments are completed.

As of 11 a.m.:

  • Hawaii Island: Approximately 41,190 customers are without power. Most of the outages are in the Puna area, North and South Kona, North and South Kohala, Hamakua and South Hilo. Damage assessments are continuing, and three helicopters are inspecting six transmission lines across the island.
  • Maui County: About 6,780 are without power. In Upcountry Maui, transmission work is in progress and damage assessments are ongoing in areas of Kula, Alaluana, Olinda, Piiholo, and Haiku. In these areas, initial assessments are identifying large, downed trees being cleared to access areas as well repairs of damaged power lines and poles. Crews are also working on remaining spot outages in West Maui, Central and South Maui, East Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
  • Oahu: About 69,150 customers remain without power as crews continue to make restorations in Windward, Leeward and Honolulu areas. Customers from Salt Lake to East Honolulu are still asked to conserve power today.

Customers can report outages online or by calling our Trouble Lines. Our Trouble Lines should also be used to report any downed power lines, which should always be treated as energized and dangerous.
