During a special meeting held on December 3, the Novato City Council unanimously appointed Sandeep Karkal as a City Councilmember to fill the District 5 seat until the next general municipal election on November 3, 2026.
At their regular meeting on October 28, the Novato City Council voted to accept applications to fill the vacant District 5 seat, which represents Hamilton and parts of southern Novato, in lieu of holding a special election. During last night's special meeting, Council interviewed four candidates that met the eligibility requirements for the seat.
Karkal, whose first regular City Council meeting will be Tuesday, December 9, stated "I've lived in Novato over 22 years. I've been General Manager and Chief Engineer with the Novato Sanitary District for about 12 years. I believe I have the knowledge, the experience and the background with the community to be able to step into this role and hit the ground running."
Karkal is a registered civil engineer and currently serves as General Manager at the Novato Sanitary District, an independent local agency serving the Novato community. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Clean Water Agencies, the California Association of Sanitation Agencies, and as President of the Board of Directors of the California Sanitation Risk Management Authority. Additionally, he is a member of the Rotary Club of Ignacio, has previously served on the Novato Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors and is a graduate of the Leadership Novato program.
