UW’s Fourth Annual High Altitude Bull Test Culminates in Field Day and Sale March 28

The University of Wyoming will wrap up its fourth annual high-altitude bull test with a field day and sale at the Laramie Research and Extension Center Saturday, March 28.

The High Altitude Bull Test and Sale provides Wyoming producers with valuable bull performance data, including PAP test results, while also offering hands-on learning opportunities for UW students.

"The goal of the bull test is to provide producers in the region the opportunity to evaluate potential sires for risk of pulmonary hypertension, or high-altitude disease, and serve as a reliable source of performance and PAP-tested bulls," says Shelby Rosasco, a UW Extension beef specialist and assistant professor of animal science. "The program also allows students to apply knowledge they have learned in the classroom."

The 2026 field day, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. at the Cliff and Martha Hansen Teaching Arena. Lunch will be provided at noon, and the bull sale will start at 1 p.m. The sale will also be broadcast on DVAuction.

"The field day and sale is the culmination of months of hard work from the consigners, faculty, staff and students," Rosasco says. "The event provides an opportunity for researchers and students to engage with producers on new research related to beef cattle management, as well as share data on the bulls that were consigned to the test."

This year's field day will kick off with a presentation by Zach McFarlane, an associate professor and beef cattle specialist at California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo. Following McFarlane's discussion of feed efficiency and feeding behavior in young bulls, UW students will present the 2025-26 High Altitude Bull Test results.

Educational programming will conclude with a cattle market outlook from Tyler Cozzens, director of the Livestock Marketing Information Center.

Bulls will be available for preview Friday, March 27, from noon-5 p.m. and before the sale on March 28 starting at 9 a.m. The sale catalog, available at https://bit.ly/uw-bull-test, includes PAP scores, expected progeny differences and growth performance for all bulls. Feed efficiency and carcass evaluation data will be available on sale day.

Consigned bulls have been on test at the Laramie Research and Extension Center since November. This year, 40 yearling bulls and 17 two-year-olds are available for sale. Breeds include Angus, SimAngus, Simmental, Hereford, Red Angus, Charolais and Wagyu cross.

Bulls will be available to load out at the conclusion of the sale.
