HHSC Reaches Construction Milestone for New Wichita Falls State Hospital

WICHITA FALLS - The Texas Health and Human Services Commission celebrated a key stage in construction of the new Wichita Falls State Hospital this week with the placement of the final steel beam.

The $452 million, 225-bed replacement hospital will provide inpatient psychiatric care and is expected to be completed in late 2027.

"This major construction milestone for the new Wichita Falls State Hospital marks a proud step forward in our mission to expand high-quality behavioral health care for Texans," Gov. Greg Abbott said. "Since 2017, Texas has invested more than $2.5 billion to modernize state facilities, so families in every corner of our state receive the critical inpatient psychiatric care they deserve. I thank the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and our local partners for their dedication to build a safer, healthier and stronger Texas."

The 411,505-square-foot facility is designed to deliver high-quality inpatient psychiatric services for adults and children. It will feature state-of-the-art therapeutic spaces, including outdoor areas and natural light throughout the building to promote recovery.

"The new Wichita Falls State Hospital will strengthen inpatient mental health care for patients, families and communities across the region," HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said. "This modern facility is a vital investment in Texas' continuum of care and will provide compassionate, high-quality services in an environment designed to promote healing."

The hospital campus opened in 1922, after the 35th Texas Legislature authorized a psychiatric facility to serve Wichita Falls and surrounding communities. Access renderings for the new Wichita Falls State Hospital (ZIP).
