Carrollton Holds Groundbreaking for New Fire Station 6

The City of Carrollton held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, April 7, to begin construction on the site of a new Fire Station 6 to be located at 1525 W. Frankford Road.

Guests at the ceremony heard about the relocation from the existing Fire Station 6 building (1115 W. Rosemeade Parkway) to the new construction site from Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick, Fire Chief Michael Thomson, and executives from Steele & Freeman, Inc., the project's construction managing company, and Hoefer Welker, the architectural design firm.

"This project supports City Council's strategic objectives and vision to be the community that families and businesses want to call home," Babick said. "Fire Station 6 is aligned with projects from the 2018 bond election and will provide long-term fire and emergency response facilities to ensure effective public safety operations for Carrollton citizens and businesses."

The new facility will contain three full-length drive-through bays capable of accommodating seven firefighters and one officer. The building is designed to meet current and anticipated emergency service needs with a minimum service life of approximately 40 years to the year 2067.

"When it opens in 2027, Fire Station 6 will align with the 100th anniversary of the Carrollton Fire Department's century of service to the City, something we are very proud of," Thomson said. "The goal of the fire station relocation plan is not just Fire Station 6, it is all of the fire stations to ensure Carrollton has adequate coverage throughout the entire City for the long-term future."

The existing Fire Station 6 building has significant structural problems, Thomson explained. The current location on Rosemeade has back-in bays, is small and problematic, and it does not address coverage and access to the Trinity Mills and Frankford Transit-Oriented Development locations. Relocating the station will improve proximity to the new developments and eliminate the need to relocate fire crews during construction. The existing Fire Station 6 is set to be demolished once the new station is completed.
