Eight cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported in Boone County this week. Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) is working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to determine if this increase in cases is related to the national outbreak. Initial investigations indicate local transmission.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have confirmed 1,645 domestic cases since May 1 and are aware of an additional 5,100 cases that require more analysis to determine if they are domestic or travel-related. The actual number of cases is likely much higher.
Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by the parasite known as Cyclospora. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis usually begin about one week after exposure. Symptoms include frequent diarrhea, weight loss, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Less common symptoms include vomiting and a low-grade fever.
Risk of exposure can be reduced by thoroughly washing produce under clean, running water, even if the produce is labeled as pre-washed. Follow additional safe food handling practices such as washing hands frequently and washing counters, cutting boards and utensils with hot, soapy water after use. Be aware that chemically disinfecting or sanitizing produce might not fully eliminate Cyclospora. Visit a clinician if experiencing prolonged or watery diarrhea, especially if it lasts more than a few days.
