Tucked within the scenic campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is one of the region's most peaceful and visually captivating destinations, the Gardens at SIUE, a 36-acre living laboratory where nature, art, education, and culture come together in unexpected ways.
Recently highlighted among noteworthy Illinois garden destinations, the Gardens at SIUE invites visitors to explore a half-mile paved loop connecting themed landscapes filled with colorful native plants, artistic displays, and tranquil gathering spaces. One of its signature attractions is The Lantern, an Asian-inspired wooden pagoda overlooking a serene lake. Illuminated at night with built-in LED lighting, the structure offers visitors a quiet place for reflection and relaxation.
Guests can also stroll through gardens inspired by the works of William Shakespeare, where rosemary, iris, and lavender bloom among literary references, or experience the Hardy Family Wind Forest, featuring kinetic sculptures that move gracefully with the breeze. A restored natural prairie filled with purple coneflowers and other native Illinois plants further showcases the university's commitment to environmental stewardship and experiential learning.
Admission to the Gardens at SIUE is free, making it a welcoming destination for students, families, tourists, and nature enthusiasts alike.
As SIUE continues to share stories that highlight the university's impact and community engagement, audiences can now also explore the university's newly launched SIUE Press Room, a centralized space designed to showcase university news, features, and media coverage. Visitors to the Press Room will now find a dedicated "In The News" section featuring stories and recognitions connected to SIUE programs, people, research and campus experiences, including features such as the Gardens at SIUE.
