Update on slope mitigation on Kunia Road northbound

Posted on Jun 18, 2026 in Highways News, Main, News

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) issues this update on the 24/7 closure of the northbound lane of Kunia Road in the vicinity of the National Security Agency Facility between Kunia Drive and Wright Avenue.

On Saturday, June 6, the section of Kunia Road fronting the slope was closed for a 10-day period to allow crews to stabilize slope damage. Due to the delayed delivery of slope stabilization materials, this closure is being extended through Saturday, June 27.

This has postponed the reopening of the northbound lane to Saturday, June 27. HDOT will reopen the lane during peak traffic hours when the slope is deemed safe and stable for motorists. Further updates on the slope stabilization will be provided as work progresses.

Traffic in both directions will be maintained on Kunia Road between Kunia Drive and Wright Avenue by contraflow in the southbound lane. Flaggers will control the alternating traffic throughout the single lane closure.
