Eagle Weather Alert: NCCU Operating Under Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) Effective Jan. 23 at 5 p.m. to Jan. 27 at 11:59 p.m.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for central N.C., including Durham and surrounding areas, effective Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, through Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. There is potential for wintry precipitation, including freezing rain and sleet, and concerns for power outages and dangerously cold temperatures persisting into early next week.

The university will operate under Condition 1 (Reduced Operations) of the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy on Friday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m., through Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 11:59 p.m. University leadership will continue to assess conditions in and around campus and issue guidance on Sunday, Jan. 25, if the Condition status will be revised.

Residential students are strongly encouraged to leave campus and shelter at home or with family/friends by noon on Friday, Jan. 23, prior to the onset of hazardous conditions. Students remaining on campus must complete the Remain-on-Campus Notification provided by Residential Life.

EMPLOYEES

Faculty and staff should take reasonable precautions for personal safety.

Under Condition 1, "The University remains open, but certain non-mandatory operations may be reduced due to more limited staffing. Mandatory employees must report to or remain at work. All other employees have the option to report late, leave early, or not work at all; however, the employee is responsible for informing his/her supervisory chain in a timely manner of all such decisions. Employees must code available leave for any work time missed during a Condition 1, unless the supervisor authorized off site work arrangements…"

Employees not working during a Condition 1 declaration are required to use personal leave. Adverse weather leave must be reconciled (made-up) within 90 days. Faculty and staff should reference the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event Policy.

CAMPUS OPERATIONS UPDATES

FRIDAY, JAN. 23

• Academic Affairs: All classes scheduled to start at 12 noon or later will be held virtually.
• Campus Dining: Pearson Dining Hall will be open:
  • Breakfast 7-10 a.m.
  • Lunch 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Dinner 5-7:30 p.m.
• Retail Locations:
  • Starbucks: 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Subway: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • C-Store: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Transportation: NCCU Campus Shuttle will operate its normal schedule until 5 p.m., then cease operations for the day.
• NCCU Student Center: Scheduled activities cancelled.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY, JAN. 24-25

• If conditions require relocation, students will be directed to report to a designated on-campus location. An Eagle Alert will notify students of the need and process to relocate. Do not relocate on-campus unless instructed.
• Academic Affairs: Scheduled classes will be held virtually.
• Campus Dining: Pearson Dining Hall will be open:
  • Brunch 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
  • Dinner 5:30-7:30 p.m.
• Transportation: NCCU Campus Shuttle will not operate its normal schedule. NCCU shuttles and vans will be on standby to transport students between designated locations, to be communicated via the PassioGo app and email.
• NCCU Student Center: Scheduled activities cancelled.

MONDAY and TUESDAY, JAN. 26-27

• If conditions require relocation, students will be directed to report to a designated on-campus location. An Eagle Alert will notify students of the need and process to relocate. Do not relocate on-campus unless instructed.
• Academic Affairs: Scheduled classes will be held virtually on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26 and 27. Information about classes for the remainder of the week will be shared in a subsequent update.
• Campus Dining: Pearson Dining Hall will be open:

  • Dinner 5:30-7:30 p.m.
