A new cross-sector initiative has been launched to improve New Zealand's ability to prevent and respond to online financial scams.

The New Zealand Anti-Scam Alliance brings together government agencies, banks, telecommunications providers, digital platforms, and consumer groups to coordinate efforts and enhance consumer protection.

Scams are a growing threat, with over 60% of New Zealanders encountering online financial scams monthly. The economic impact is estimated at nearly $200 million annually, with some estimates significantly higher. The Alliance aims to reduce this harm by improving how scam-related intelligence is shared and acted upon across sectors.

The Alliance will also lead the development of a national anti-scam strategy. Additional work will include updating industry codes of practice, raising public awareness, and supporting businesses and consumers with tools to prevent and respond to scams.

This initiative builds on existing efforts, such as the banking sector's rollout of Confirmation of Payee (account-name matching software), and reflects a shared commitment to protecting New Zealanders from scams.
