It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we mark the passing of Dame Annette King DBE, former CEO of Ogilvy UK whose indelible mark shaped not only Ogilvy but also the broader advertising industry and the countless lives she touched.
Annette's illustrious career spanned 35 years in the industry, with 17 of those at Ogilvy-a place she truly considered her professional home-during which she held eight different roles consistently rising to meet and exceed every challenge. She was a fierce, passionate visionary, famously pairing a steely competitive edge with a legendary capacity for kindness, infectious enthusiasm, a wicked sense of humor, and sheer fun. She led and lived with absolute humanity and a boundless verve for life. Annette profoundly loved people-whether clients, colleagues, peers, or even competitors-approaching everyone with genuine curiosity and unparalleled generosity with her time.
Her strategic genius built Ogilvy One into an absolute powerhouse, achieving unprecedented record-breaking heights before she took the helm of Ogilvy UK Group as CEO. Annette adored clients and winning-especially winbacks. Her legendary self-acclaimed street fighting spirit was famously showcased in her triumph to win back the prestigious British Airways account, a testament to her belief that "people buy people" and her relentless pursuit of excellence.
Annette's impact extended far beyond pitches won and agencies transformed. She was a transformative leader whose insights were sought at the highest echelons, cultivating a culture of creativity, confidence, and distinction, and mentoring countless colleagues. Perhaps most inspiring was her radical approach to talent: she was famously promoted twice while on maternity leave - a powerful act that established a progressive standard and profoundly paved the way for countless women to thrive in the industry.
Beyond Ogilvy, Annette was a tireless and fervent advocate for causes close to her heart, dedicating herself to mental health initiatives, pioneering menopause policies, and promoting neurodiversity long before these became standard corporate discussions. As a mentor for the Marketing Academy and Chair of the Advertising Association, she embodied "paying it forward," nurturing emerging talent with unwavering dedication. Her spirit, known for bursts of laughter, deep friendship, and a love of a glass of Chardonnay, served as a constant, joyful reminder that while advertising is serious business, it should also be "wild and wonderful."
As Dame Annette King herself so eloquently put it: "To those who know me, it's no exaggeration to say that this industry has been one of my great loves. I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have been embraced by it."
And you us, Dame Annette.
The advertising industry and the Ogilvy family have lost an irrefutable Giant. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with her beloved family -Henry, Carter, and Sylvie-her cherished friends, and the vast tapestry of colleagues whose lives she so immeasurably enriched. Her brilliant spirit, her incisive wisdom, and her unwavering belief in both excellence and the boundless potential of human kindness will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
Below are heartfelt tributes from colleagues around the world.
Liz Taylor, Global Chief Creative Officer, Ogilvy:
"Annette was all heart. Love and care were her default setting, and the source of the extraordinary force she was for everyone around her. What lit her up most was people - her clients, her teams, her peers - and she had that rare gift of making each of us feel seen, supported, and capable of more than we thought possible.
For our industry, in all its experiments and ambitions, Annette brought bravery, laughter and deep humanity. She made everything she touched better - shaping, crafting and elevating the work with an instinct and clarity that was uniquely hers. But perhaps her greatest talent was bringing that same greatness out in others, lifting us all a little higher.
Her love of Ogilvy ran deep. She truly was an Ogilvy Giant.
And the truth is, our love for her runs just as deep. We will miss her dearly, and we will carry her spirit - her warmth, her courage, her belief in people - with us always."
Ann Higgins, CEO, Ogilvy Consulting EMEA; Sophie Hoffstetter, Global Client Lead, WPP; Fiona Gordon, Global CEO, Advertising, Ogilvy:
"It has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside Annette, to learn from Annette and to call her a dear friend. We'll aim to carry forward her laughter, her verve for life and her love of people every day."
Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman, Ogilvy UK:
"Dame Annette embodied exactly the kind of glorious mass of contradictions which made her a rare natural fit for our industry. Bizarrely, she had a wonderfully abrasive personality, and yet almost everyone liked and revered her - except perhaps the poor unfortunates who had to compete with her. She was as fun to socialise as she was enjoyable to work for; she inspired immense loyalty, and deserved every bit. She was part New Yorker (she worked in New York for many years) but never wholly left Swindon - and was at home almost everywhere. She also combined a razor-sharp mind, dry-humour, sharp-elbows and gritty determination with immense intuition and kindness. You would go to see Annette whether you wanted someone assassinated (she would make it look like an accident) or if you needed to take a day off to attend your daughter's Nativity play in the middle of a pitch. I have never met anyone, inside the business or outside, who came to display such a mix of complementary talents and carried them all so well. We shall not see her like again, and I shall miss her more than I can say."
